You are a loyal and generous friend.

Sometimes you think of yourself as boring and you don't realise how much your friends value your quiet kindness.

Your modest exterior conceals an inner core of pure steel and you can get through events that would leave other people on their knees.

Your sense of duty tends to blind you to possibilities, sometimes you need to let other people stand on their own feet and do what's best for you.

Harry Potter And The Final Chapter (Plus Redundant Epilogue)

My brother and I went to see the new movie in blessed 2D. None of this horrible headache-inducing gimmicky 3D for me, thanks. The only problem with this was that we obviously got stuck with the crappy theatre, because the center speaker was not working properly so the soundtrack was louder than the actual dialogue. This was tolerable in the talky bits with no music, but as soon as there was background noise, the dialogue became hard to understand and I had to revert to (gasp!) actually reading the subtitles.

I really liked the movie, though, and this has mainly encouraged me to go see it again with proper sound.

But the book is still better. ;)

What is this I don't even

So I just wrote a long rant about how Evangeline Lilly and her bloody character they made up for equality will totally ruin The Hobbit, and then LJ ate my entry.

As if it wasn't bad enough already.

Bottom line: the fans disliked Movie Arwen, so they will hate an original female character not written by Tolkien even more. Even if they would have cast an actress who could stand up to all the great names already cast.

I've already wasted half an hour of my life writing and therefore thinking about this, and I'm going to go sulk now. Peace out.

Epic show is epic

So, yeah, last night's Doctor Who? Brilliant.

I was blown away most especially by Matt Smith's performance. I'll be the first to admit that I had my doubts when he was cast two years ago, but he has long since proven that he is well and truly worthy of the title.

Rory has fast been climbing to the top ten of my favourite companions of all time. He is so amazing that I even put up with being constantly in fear of him getting killed dramatically (again). Plus: he was being badass, and crying, and holding a baby, all in one episode! My poor ovaries almost couldn't take it.

I am finally warming to both Karen and Amy. I still think the writers should avoid her crying, because she just isn't convincing at it. But her acting was really quite good in this one, and this season has made me tolerate Amy's character a lot more, too.
Will not go into the plot or THE BIG MASSIVE REVEAL OF OMG because I don't want to spoil anybody who hasn't seen it yet (my boyfriend is still on Season 4 at the moment). But suffice to say that even though I had already thought of it, it still blew me away that they actually went there.
Also, I am now on Twitter. Yes, I know, I am weak.

It's cold, it's wet, and I want NZ back

This morning I made some leg warmers out of my old sports socks, because I could literally not feel my ankles anymore. AND I WAS INDOORS. I am typing this entry with fingerless gloves on. Ugh.
I was kind of hoping coming back from New Zealand would be easier than this. There, summer is nearing its end, and I hoped that coming back here spring would already be setting in. No such luck. There was ice on the pond this morning, FIA.

What also didn't help was that I went straight back to work a day after I came back, and spent the first three days of work nearly falling asleep at my desk in the middle of the day. I obviously underestimated jetlag.

I did manage to see the latest episode of Supernatural, though, and can I just say FTW?

Collapse )

And now for the Return Of The Fic Of The Week, which in the spirit of things is another Supernatural one. Unlike the episode, though, this is pretty heavy stuff and not for the faint of heart. BUT SO WORTH IT. It's called Paradisi//Inferno and was written by an anonymous author in response to a prompt up on deancastiel.
The Story: When Dean goes to Hell, Castiel is sent forth to retrieve his soul from the Pit. His journey lasts for forty years, and is not without obstacles.
The Love: This, I think, is the ultimate story of Dean's rescue from Hell. That Castiel was there the whole time, suffering with him as he searched for him, is such a fantastic concept. What is almost even better is the author's writing style. It is disturbingly graphic and amazingly poetic, often within the same sentence. It's gorgeous and horrific in equal measure, and just so, so powerful. And the characterisation, GOD. Dean's and Castiel's characters, even when they hardly have any lines, are so, so dead on. Just... I cannot put it into words. GO READ, NOW.
The Rest: Just a heads-up: the R rating on top is for graphic descriptions of the non-fun kind, kids.

Anyway, off to bed now. Night!

You guys I'm back!

So, yeah, the video blog thing didn't really pan out because apparently, YouTube hates my camera and refuses to upload any videos made with it. But I'm working on my travel report as we speak, and photos should be up soon.

New Zealand was amazing once again, though of course the massive disaster happening while we were there did cast a big shadow. Thankfully our tour had already moved on from Christchurch at the time of the earthquake, but it was very scary to see the streets we walked and buildings we visited not a week before reduced to rubble and dust. My thoughts are with the people of Canterbury at this time.

More will follow soon! I am going to sleep off my jetlag now. *hugs*

Things To Do In Auckland When You're...

Good afternoon from a café in Sky City, Auckland!

samena and I arrived here safely yesterday after a very long and exhausting day of travel. Vic from Red Carpet Tours was very kind to pick us up from the airport and drive down to our hotel.

Unfortunately samena has gotten sick, possibly from travelling through all the different time zones, so I'm on my own today while she recovers back at the hotel. I took a nice long walk from Parnell through the Auckland Domain, the Botanical Gardens, and Albert Park, down to the seaside and back to Sky City. This has taken me four hours (with stops, of course). I love walking around here so much! The air smells of apple grass, as the Doctor would say. :)

Anyway, best check my flist before my hour of free access is up! Love you all!
