Genre: Lotrps AU/Harry Potter future!fic crossover
Summary: Dom becomes a teacher at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and finds himself strangely attracted to Elijah, one of the Gryffindor seventh-years.
Warnings: Like I said, AU and crossover. Also it's HP so, obviously, supernatural stuff.
Disclaimer: The wonderful HP world is created by JK Rowling who is not me, and the LOTR boys do not belong to me, both facts which I obviously regret but are nevertheless true. Sniff.
Feedback: Makes me prostrate myself at your feet and grovel pathetically.
Author's notes: This is it, then. The final chapter. There is an Epilogue coming, but that's just frosting. Basically this is the end. These boys have been living in my head for over two years, and we've been through a lot together. I'll miss them so, so much!
Thank you to all who helped in some way to make this story happen: pinkegogirl, dominicluver, ladysunrope, and ismenin for beta'ing various chapters, and also willdirect4food and theonemonaghan for providing beautiful art work. And thanks to saura_, just because.
Tomorrow at midnight, the world of Harry Potter will come to an end for good. Thank you, JK Rowling, for bringing it into my life!
And last but not least, thanks to all those who took the time to read and comment! It means more to me than you know, and I love you for it!
Potter now got to his feet, apparently having calmed down enough to speak again. “This case has already been reviewed by the School Board, Malfoy. We know the rules perfectly well, and have investigated the case. All of Elijah’s homework assignments and essays have been reviewed by Professor Monaghan’s peers, and all agree that the grades he has awarded Mr. Wood this year are consistent with the quality of his work. None of his fellow students say they have detected favouritism in Professor Monaghan’s class. He admitted himself that what he did was unethical, but he did not violate any rules. An official warning may be in order, but there are no grounds to expel him.”
Malfoy wasn’t smirking any more now. His cheeks flushed a pale pink. “He has secretly been having sex with one of his students on the school premises,” he hissed. “Don’t tell me that’s not against the rules, Potter.”
Elijah silently had to agree with that logic. Dom may not have favoured him in class, and he himself may be a consenting adult, but the fact remained that they were a teacher and a student who were involved in a sexual relationship, and had been caught in the act. He could not see how they could be saved from that one.
He was astonished, therefore, when Potter grinned, wolfishly. “Certainly it is, Malfoy. But how are you going to prove it?”
For a moment, Malfoy seemed unable to think of anything to say. Then, quite suddenly and without looking at her, he barked: “Morgana!”
Morgan cringed as if he had raised his hand to her. “Yes, sir?”
“You are friends with this… Wood boy,” he said, turning to her. “Did you know he was in a relationship?”
“Of course we did, everyone did! It wasn’t exactly a secret,” interrupted Lily, unbidden, which Elijah thought was a very strange thing to say, and so, apparently, did Malfoy.
“What the hell are you talking about, girl?”
“Elijah told us very early on what was going on, and why he kept disappearing all the time. And of course, later on, when they were discovered, the whole school knew!”
Elijah tried very hard to arrange his features into an expression that said he wasn’t hearing this for the first time. Dom was frowning slightly, but made no other sign of being surprised.
Malfoy’s frown was a lot deeper, and he looked round as Professor Serkis stood up and cleared his throat. “Lily is correct. I caught them myself.”
“Caught who?” hissed Malfoy in furious frustration.
“Why, Elijah and his lover, of course. Some Australian bloke, I forget his name. Myself and Professor Astin found them on the edge of the Forbidden Forest after hours. Quite a little scandal among the students it caused, too.”
Malfoy gaped at him for a moment, then laughed. “That’s very noble of you, Serkis, but we both know it was merely the Changeling in another one of his disguises.”
“I don’t think so,” said Serkis, staring stonily into Malfoy’s face. “He was taller than our Dom. Different voice, too. Redhead, bit too pretty, if you know what I mean. Looked sort of gormless, to be honest. Still, whatever floats your boat, mate,” he concluded, with a wink at Elijah, who was holding his breath.
Before Malfoy could think of anything to say, Viggo got to his feet. “The young man in question, Geoffrey, has been in my employ for a short time. Unfortunately he did not prove suitable for the job, lazy and unreliable as he was. I finally discovered that his frequent absence was due to his relationship with one of the students. I dismissed him just before Easter, and he returned to Australia shortly after.”
Potter was grinning again. “So you see, Malfoy, there is plenty of proof that young Mr. Wood was indeed involved in a sexual relationship. With Viggo’s assistant, Geoffrey. This is not against the school rules, as both parties were consenting adults. I will allow that some rules were broken, but they were minor offenses and have already been dealt with by Professor Serkis and myself. As a result, Mr. Wood has been confined to the castle for the rest of the school year, and I can assure you we have kept an eye on him, and that he did not break his house arrest. On the few occasions he did venture out, such as Quidditch matches, he was under his teachers’ supervision at all times. I have gathered that it was around this time that his romantic relationship with Dominic Monaghan began. However, between then and now, they cannot possibly have had any sexual encounters on the school premises. What they got up to during Easter holidays is not relevant, as it happened outside the castle grounds, and is therefore neither your business, nor mine.”
He sat back, leaving Malfoy standing between the long tables, seething, his face pale with rage. When he spoke, his voice was shaking slightly, but somehow still managed to sneer: “you may have them all rallying under the flag of Mudbloods and freak-lovers now, but sadly, Potter, you’ll find you have more than one member of staff keeping secrets from you.”
He turned back to the table of witnesses, where Viggo had sat back down, and turned his pale grey eyes to Billy. “William Boyd.”
Dom made a sudden movement, but Billy shot him a look, and he quieted down. The Scotsman had gone quite pale, but was regarding Malfoy with a steady look. “Yes?”
“It would seem as though you have been lying to a number of people about your true parentage. Would you care to explain why?”
Billy still looked at him unblinkingly. “I did not lie. I merely wished for my private life to remain private.”
Malfoy regained his smirk. “So you admit it. Tell us then, Professor Boyd, who are your parents?”
Billy drew himself up, proudly. “My father was William Boyd, Herbology expert of the Glasgow Warlock Society. My mother was Fagus Sylvatica Dawyck, Dryad of the beech tree.”
There were surprised murmurs all around, and several people, including Potter, were looking at Billy in surprise. Dom, however, was smiling at him with a kind of tender pride.
Malfoy looked smug again, delighting at the look on Potter’s face. “So you have been lying all your life about who you are?”
“I have not,” said Billy calmly. “My parentage does not define who I am. I realise that I should have confided in my colleagues, and I am sorry that I didn’t,” here he looked regretfully at Harry, “but I’m afraid I do not have the strength that Dom has. So I kept silent. If by so doing I betrayed anyone’s trust, I beg forgiveness.”
“You can restore that trust very easily,” said Malfoy silkily, “by telling the truth for once in your life, Boyd. I understand that you received an interesting note, the Saturday before Easter?”
Billy nodded. “An anonymous note, telling me to go to what is referred to as the Secret Room, or the Room of Requirement, and that I might find something to my interest.”
“And what did you find?”
“Two young men, in bed together,” said Billy simply.
“Men?" said Malfoy sharply. "Men?”
“Yes,” said Billy decidedly, with another look at Dom. “Men.”
“But you could tell that of these men was not actually a man, isn’t that right?”
Billy looked straight into Malfoy’s eyes. “I may not be entirely human, Mr. Malfoy, but I can assure you I can recognise a male specimen when I see one, and there were two in that room.”
“But you saw him!” hissed Malfoy. “You saw the Changeling. Do not lie to me, mongrel!”
The look in Billy’s eyes could freeze lava. “I saw nothing of the sort. All I saw were two young people engaging in sexual activity. Elijah was still in the castle, and not out of bounds in any way. The other young man was, so I sent him away. That’s what happened.”
Harry looked evenly from Billy to Malfoy. “And since Professor Boyd has, as he admits, Faerie blood in his veins, and can therefore recognise Changelings, it would seem as though this witness puts an end to the debate, Malfoy.”
But Malfoy wasn’t quite finished yet. In a few strides, he had marched over to the witness table and seized Mephistola Zabini by the wrist, pulling her towards the centre of the room with him.
“This girl is a Seer,” he snapped. “She is the one my daughter got her information from about the Changeling. She saw it all, she saw him! Didn’t you?” he said menacingly.
Mephistola looked terrified, but still looked Malfoy in the eye. Then her great dark eyes turned to Dom, tearfully, as she shook her head slowly.
“What do you mean by that?” Malfoy spat.
“Usually when a person shakes their head, they wish to indicate that the answer is ‘no’,” remarked Potter dryly.
“You filthy lying little blood traitor!” Malfoy seized the young girl by the shoulders and shook her roughly. Several people jumped to their feet, and the Under-secretary barked: “Mr. Malfoy! You will stop this at once, sir!”
Malfoy let go of Mephistola, and Philipa hurriedly came forward and took her away. The Under-secretary glared at him before consulting his papers. “In light of recent witness accounts and events, I am hereby authorised by the Minister for Magic to declare the charges made against Professor Dominic Monaghan, to be cleared. The charges against his attackers still stand, as well as a new one against Mr. Draco Malfoy, for contempt and physical abuse of the young lady. I’ll see you in court, sir.”
Malfoy was looking around at them all, eyes full of loathing. “I should have known. Mudbloods and blood traitors and Faerie scum, all sticking together, covering up for each other. I don’t know why I have wasted my time on you.”
He turned on his heel and strode out of the room, fuming, quickly followed by the Magical Law Enforcement wizard leading Mortianna. The girl shot a look of purest hatred over her shoulder at Dom and Elijah.
The other Ministry representatives were now rising to their feet, gathering their papers and filing out of the room. The Under-secretary and the Headmaster left together, presumably for his office to discuss the trial. Philipa was leading the younger students away.
Elijah looked over at Dom, who still sat as if Stunned, staring at Billy, Viggo and Andy as if he had never seen them before. Then he suddenly leapt over the table and embraced all three of them at once.
Laughing, they hugged him back, each in turn. His embrace with Billy lasted a full minute, and when he finally pulled back there were tears in his eyes. “Thank you.”
Billy simply smiled, stepping back so Dom could be hugged by Fran and Naveen.
“Don’t you worry, Dom, I’ll take the Malfoy family to court if it’s the last thing I do!” said Fran fiercely, kissing him on the cheek. Dom just smiled sadly and looked over at the other end of the table, where Elijah was being helped up by his father.
Walking over, he gently took over from Mr. Wood, and folded Elijah into an intimate embrace, taking his face carefully in his hands and kissing him tenderly.
This seemed to be the cue for everyone else to take their leave; mumbling something about going to the Headmaster’s office, Billy herded them all out and closed the door behind them.
Alone in the classroom now, the lovers simply stood together for a while, arms around each other and foreheads touching, breathing as one.
“I love you,” whispered Dom at last. “So much, Elijah.”
Elijah looked up into his eyes, seeing the sadness there. “But you’re still leaving.”
Dom bowed his head. “Yes. I have to.”
Elijah smiled sadly. “I know you have to. Karl told me that it’s your fate to wander.”
Dom smiled back joylessly. “Aye, he would have. He’s always known it. I did too, of course, but… I wanted to resist it. To escape it. But I cannot escape what I am, Elijah. I tried to fool myself for so long, but… I am what I am, and I have to accept that, now. I’m not Pinocchio; I won’t turn into a real boy by simply wishing it really hard.”
“No,” said Elijah with a watery chuckle, cupping his lover’s cheek. “You’ve always been, and will always be, Dumbo.”
“Always the outsider,” whispered Dom, leaning into the hand. “Always different.”
Elijah leaned closer, breathing against his lips. “I’ve always kind of liked different.”
“We can never have a normal life together,” said Dom. “I can’t offer you that. We can’t ever move into a suburban house, be a regular family. I’m a Faerie, I can’t stay in one place, it’s not my nature. And where I go, you can’t always follow.”
“I understand,” said Elijah. “But I know you will come back to me every time.”
Dom smiled at him. “Always.”
“Then we can find a way,” said Elijah decidedly. “We’ll be together, one way or the other. Maybe not all the time, but as long as I know you love me, I don’t care. I’ll always be waiting for you, Dom.”
Dom kissed him passionately, heatedly. “Stars above, but I love you.”
Elijah moaned softly, sinking into the kiss, returning it fiercely. Then, to his surprise, Dom pushed him back. The spark was back in his eyes, and he grinned. “Now, I should really stop distracting you. You have exams you need to study for, and I need to get to the Forest.”
“What for?” asked Elijah, pouting slightly.
Dom’s smile softened. “Well, you see, I have to go and build a house for the man I love, so he can be with me whenever he wants to, and maybe even stay with me forever.”
Elijah’s smile widened. “Stay forever, huh?”
“If he wants to.”
“I have a feeling he might.”
“Good,” said Dom, climbing up on the windowsill. “Then I’ll see you after the exams, okay?”
And after blowing his lover a kiss, he jumped lightly down, landing on the lawn two stories below, and set off towards the Forest.
Elijah watched him go, smiling, and then walked down the corridor towards the common room, missing him already but knowing that this was the beginning of their life together. It would be difficult, full of obstacles and complications, but most of all, it would be filled with love.
He couldn’t wait.
